Ah, this ARC has been gracing my shelf for quite some time now, taunting me with its promise of a wild ride. As a devoted fan of Josh Malerman, I knew I would be sucked into his vivid and electrifying prose, even if it meant facing some dark and twisted themes. His writing is like a siren’s call, luring me in no matter what thoughts I may have about the overall plot. And let me tell you, the first half of this collection of short stories had me hooked like a fish on a line. But alas, the second half failed to reel me in as much.
This book is a smorgasbord of genres – horror, mystery, thriller, and even a sprinkle of science fiction. Now, I’m not the biggest sci-fi enthusiast, but even I found myself intrigued by the novellas in this category. Don’t let my personal preferences dissuade you from picking up this gem.
I highly recommend giving this anthology a chance, especially if you’re a fan of mind-bending plots and delving into the darker corners of humanity. Malerman’s writing will tangle your brain into knots as you try to unravel the bizarre mysteries presented within.
On a scale of 1 to 5, I give this book a solid 3.5. But of course, platforms like Goodreads don’t allow for half-star ratings, so I’ve had to get clever with my reviews on my personal website and Bookstagram. (Shameless plug, feel free to check them out!)
A huge thank you to Netgalley and Random House Publishing Group – Ballantine for granting me an advanced reading copy of this book. Now, if only I could figure out how to clone myself so I can read even more books.
