Grady Hendrix is a remarkable wizard of literary prowess. His ability to craft a thoroughly despicable and enraging character, inciting an urge to physically harm them, is a testament to his mastery of the written word. Mark, the antagonist in this book, was truly the bane of my existence. Hendrix’s writing ignites the senses, setting the nerve endings ablaze with his skillful storytelling. While Mark may bear similarities to my own sibling, my sister was never plagued by the same torments and horrors that befell Mark, which I will refrain from revealing in order to preserve the element of surprise for future readers.
Overall, the story was nothing short of brilliant. While some may classify it as horror, I found it to be more of a darkly humorous tale of hauntings. Hendrix has a unique talent for setting the scene in a manner that requires one to blink and refocus in order to believe what has just been read. His abstract descriptions effectively transport the reader into the vividly imagined dimensions of these hauntings, some of which may evoke a sense of absurdity while others elicit true fear.
The infusion of southern charm throughout the book was a delightful touch for a northerner like myself, who has yet to experience the culture of the South. The exploration of new lives, beliefs, and family dynamics, all intricately intertwined with secrets and deep-rooted loyalties, captivated me from chapter to chapter.
Hendrix expertly delves into the complexities of sibling bonds and the weight of family secrets, often buried so deep that they are taken to the grave, protected by an unspoken code of familial loyalty. This book served as my introduction to Grady Hendrix, and I eagerly anticipate meeting him at an upcoming event. His undeniable talent and magnetic storytelling are sure to captivate and immerse me once again.
