DEADENDIA VOL I & II By Hamish Steele

To be honest, this is my initial experience with a graphic novel, given to me by an editor I met at a book event through a mutual acquaintance. I wasn’t sure what to expect, having only read comic books as a child and not graphic novels. But now, I can clearly see the distinction. I was completely absorbed in the story. It was an enthralling read, unexpected for a graphic novel. The protagonist, Barney Guttman, has a troubled past that may be distressing for some readers. Life is tough, and the main characters reflect this, showing that it isn’t always easy. I would call it a testament to survival in difficult times.

Without revealing too much, this was a surprising read. It delves into dark themes in a relatable, humorous, and compassionate way. It may seem contradictory, but you’ll find yourself connecting with the characters and empathizing with them as if they are your own friends or someone you know who has gone through similar struggles.

You’re in for a startling treat, with a deep and dark yet also lighthearted tone. The story also has a strong, raw, and human element that is relatable and emotionally charged, leaving you with a desire to advocate for others and perhaps even feel some anger. The characters truly make the story. It’s a varied mix of flavors and textures that makes it nearly impossible to put down once you start reading. Bravo!

As someone who typically prefers novels, this was a refreshing change. The artwork is beautiful, and I would definitely continue with the story.

VOL II

DeadEndia proves that the notion of a second volume not living up to the first is completely untrue. This installment combines ghosts, demons, talking dogs, and LGBTQIA+ representation. It’s a perfect blend of suspense and humor, with moments that will make you want to cry or give someone a hug.

It’s hard to say more without spoiling anything, but the artwork is stunning, and the creative and dark storyline will keep you captivated from beginning to end.

Thank you again to Union Square & Co for providing me with a copy of this book.
