Candy Cain Kills, released just prior to the July Christmas season, was strategically timed to make a grand entrance. Author Brian McAuley delivers a truly chilling and captivating tale of holiday-themed horror in this unique thriller. In fact, I was so engrossed in the story that I devoured it in only two sittings. The characters were expertly developed, the descriptions of gore were intricately detailed, and the plot twists were nothing short of masterful.
As this was my first experience with Brian McAuley’s work, I eagerly anticipate delving into his debut novel, Curse of the Reaper. If it is anything like his sophomore effort, I am certain it will be a thoroughly enjoyable read, as well as a testament to his exceptional writing abilities. The story flowed seamlessly, without any unnecessary filler or glossing over of important details. Furthermore, the inclusion of moments of humor added a layer of depth and enjoyment to the overall reading experience.
Set in the year 1995 and beyond, I found myself easily able to relate to the time period and actions of the teenage characters, particularly the sarcastic and endearing younger sister, Fiona. In fact, I would liken this book to a high-speed race involving Goosebumps and NASCAR, with its fast-paced nature, unique plot, heightened levels of gore, and nostalgic elements that harken back to childhood reading experiences.
I had the pleasure of reviewing an advanced copy of this novel courtesy of Shortwave, for which I am extremely grateful. In fact, I was so impressed with Candy Cain Kills that I have already pre-ordered a copy for myself and intend to give it as a gift to others as well. It is clear to me that this author and publication have a true winner on their hands.
