I can understand the reservations individuals may have towards attending camp. As a child, I myself had no desire to partake in such activities, and as an adult, my experience at Camp Damascus, solidified this sentiment for me indefinitely. While I do appreciate the opportunity to rent out a space for recreational purposes and host a BBQ, I must admit that the presence of individuals donning red polos or assuming the role of counselors would certainly prompt me to take action.
In his debut horror novel, Chuck Tingle masterfully evokes a sense of true-life terror, a sensation that may not fully manifest until one has delved into its pages or experienced a similar environment, such as Rose, the MFC of Camp Damascus. This work contains a multitude of themes, ranging from the supernatural and ancient demons to LGBTQIA+ representation and organized religion, making it a compelling and multifaceted read.
Tingle’s writing is both imaginative and inventive, evoking a combination of Willy Wonka’s whimsy and Stephen King’s mastery of horror. With each chapter, the reader is transported to a new and vividly depicted scene, eliciting a range of emotions and sensations, some of which may be unfamiliar to individuals who are neurodivergent. I found Rose’s portrayal to be particularly noteworthy, as it effectively balances exaggeration with a focus on her unique perspectives and emotional understanding. She is a multifaceted and complex woman, not reduced to mere representative adjectives.
The elements of horror in this novel are expertly crafted, eliciting a visceral reaction within the reader. Tingle’s vivid imagery conjures up a sense of unease, effectively setting the tone for the story. One of the most impressive aspects of this work is the development of its characters, including Rose, her father, Willow, Dr. Smith, and even her mother. Each character is distinct and fully realized, their tonality, expressions, and mood palpable to the reader.
In conclusion, I must commend Chuck Tingle for his exceptional writing and storytelling abilities. It is evident that he is a skilled writer, and I eagerly anticipate future works from him. I would also like to extend my gratitude to Tor Publishing, a group I hold in high regard, for providing me with an advance copy of this novel. It was a pleasure to read and greatly appreciated. Love is indeed real.
