This latest novel marks my forty-first publication of the year, and I am pleased to say that it has already soared to the top three of my list. While the others are still pending, this particular work is undoubtedly a standout.
Within this book, I have skillfully woven a symphony of horror, accompanied by a choir of well-developed characters. As with a beloved CD from the 1990s, each chapter is essential and captivating, making it nearly impossible to put down. Unfortunately, my own personal obligations did not allow me to fully immerse myself in this masterpiece, but I assure you that any interruptions were met with great reluctance.
Scott Leeds’ debut novel, “Schrader’s Chord: A Novel,” is a true tour de force. The narrative is driven by intense character development, familial trauma, and thought-provoking discussions that left a lasting impression on me. I would compare Leeds’ writing to a fusion of Pavlov and King, as his deep understanding of psychology is both fascinating and unnerving. Furthermore, his skill in character creation is unparalleled, as I found myself fully invested in the emotions and struggles of the protagonists.
As a product of the 1980s, I greatly appreciated the numerous cultural references that added depth and authenticity to the story. Leeds’ writing is hauntingly beautiful, evoking a sense of resolution even in darkness. It is akin to savoring a favorite meal or receiving a comforting embrace from a beloved pet or person (depending on the day). His words felt like home, a place of familiarity and comfort, despite the unsettling nature of the narrative.
Be warned, this novel is not for the faint of heart. It is rife with graphic and gory twists that will satisfy even the most avid horror fan. However, fear comes in many forms within these pages, and I highly recommend setting the mood with some Portishead or Mazzy Star before delving into this chilling tale. In short, Scott Leeds’ “Schrader’s Chord” is a must-read for any lover of the horror genre.
Put on a vinyl. Maybe some Portishead, or Mazzy Star, something easy; chill out and read this one. It is a must read.
