It was truly a blessing to attend the highly-anticipated biomusical, “Lempika,” at the esteemed Longacre Theatre on March 21st. This production pays homage to the legendary artist, Tamara de Lempika, and her profound impact on the French Neo-Classical art movement. The Longacre Theatre, part of the renowned Shubert Organization and one of only 16 Broadway theaters, exudes a majestic charm all its own.
Despite its smaller size, the Longacre Theatre possesses a captivating aura that makes every seat feel like front-row. The performers were fully engaged with the audience, creating a sense of stillness and awe that lasted until the final applause.
The cast of “Lempika” is nothing short of outstanding. The ensemble, orchestra, and lighting designers brought Tamara’s story to life with their impeccable talent, fashion flair, and originality. The narrative remained true to Tamara’s unwavering passion and determination to follow her heart and achieve success. Her unique vision of beauty, which defied the conventions of her time, breathed new life onto the canvas and continues to inspire to this day. Tamara’s work embodies elements of pop culture, guidance, style, courage, intrigue, and sexuality, all of which were beautifully portrayed in the production. Who is to say what a “Woman is.” No one.
This production is a testament to the resilience of the human spirit, filled with grit, love, laughter, and astounding vocal performances. The staff at the event were truly wonderful, adding to the overall exceptional experience. I would not hesitate to see “Lempika” again and again and “Stay” in the heart or the testament art is all around us. It exists.
I was deeply moved and completely engrossed in the show. As someone who is not typically drawn to musicals, I was pleasantly surprised by the captivating lyrics and music, which shattered my preconceived notions and opened my mind to future productions. Co-Writer Carson Kreitzer wrote the book, story, lyrics and original content. As a Tamara enthusiast, this was remarkable, and alligns beautifully with Tamara’s life. Though every engine cannot run to “Perfection” alone, Co-Writer Book/Music Matt Gould shared his deep passion for art and his love for Tamara’s work, aligning the longevity of Tamara’s impact on pop culture for decades and to come. As driven artists, they both recognized the importance of embracing multiple elements and perspectives, over history and morality that the world begs to listen for as I took to heart while watching “Lempika.” These two brilliant, beautiful, souls collected what the earth needed and brought it to stage. Bravo!
Rachel Chavkin, the director of “Lempika” and “Hadestown”, has recently been added to my list of admired individuals as the latter enters its fifth year on Broadway and she receives two Tony Awards. Her unique approach to storytelling through multiple senses has deepened my appreciation for Lempika. As you enjoy both shows, be sure to take a moment to look up at 48th Street – you may be in for a magnificent surprise.
I would like to express my sincere appreciation to the Tamara de Lempika Estate, LLC for the remarkable realization of this extraordinary production. I eagerly anticipate the release of the upcoming documentary, “The True Story of Tamara de Lempika & The Art of Survival” showcasing the exceptional talents of the cast of “Lempika,” under the direction of the renowned filmmaker, Julie Rubio, whose notable work includes “East Side Sushi.” Julie also holds the esteemed position of President at Women in Films, SF Bay Area. It is worth noting that despite the considerable achievements and prestige associated with this role, women have long been paving the way for such coveted positions. However, it is unfortunate that there is a significant disparity in funding between genders. This is even more pronounced for Hispanic women, making access to funding a crucial factor in bringing to life stories told from a female perspective, encompassing culture, folklore, and unique insights.
Take a moment and look at what you are wearing the color, textures, design. Tamara’s influence is resting on your shoulders. Within means, please donate to the documentary as it is almost complete.

Lastly, I would like to express my sincere appreciation to every person involved in making this production a reality. In a world that can often feel tumultuous, “Lempika” serves as a timely reminder of the power of art to inspire, uplift, and unite us all.
